Pakistan blocks BBC World News Channel

BBC World News channel will not be aired in Pakistan from today as the cable operators have blocked the channel accusing it of broadcasting “anti-Pakistan” content after the NATO strike that killed 24 soldiers.

World's leading channel was blocked for airing a documentary “Secret Pakistan” that exposes Pakistan's secrecy highlighting links between the Inter-Services Intelligence agency and terror outfits in Afghanistan.

The controversial documentary was being aired in Pakistan over the weekend. However, no move has been taken against other channels like Sky News, Fox News, CNN and Al—Jazeera.

The All Pakistan Cable Operators Association said that the channels will be blocked if found airing “anti-Pakistan” content in the country.

Reacting to the move, the BBC condemned Pakistan cable television operators. The channel boasts of its editorial independence and it should not be restricted, the BBC added hoping for an early reinstation of the channel in the country.

Pakistan's move came out of aggression after its 24 soldiers were killed in a NATO strike last week near Pakistani tribal region of Mohmand. The army had condemned the attack terming it as "unprovoked and indiscriminate".

Meanwhile, the Pakistan cabinet has decided not to attend the next week's conference on Afghanistan's future in the German city of Bonn protesting  the attack.

Indian GDP growth slips to 6.9%

India's economy grew at the slowest rate for more than two years in the second quarter, confirming the country's shift to lower growth rates of about 7 per cent.

Data released on Wednesday showed economic growth for the quarter to the end of September slowed to an annualised 6.9 per cent, weighed on by almost two years of progressive monetary tightening, low domestic business confidence and a retreat of foreign capital.

In addition, India's policymakers have been unable to tame inflation raging at near double-digit levels.

The last time India's gross domestic product growth fell below 7 per cent was in the quarter to June 2009, when it was struck by the effects of the global financial crisis in western economies.

The drop in the latest quarter -- from the 7.7 per cent recorded in the three months to the end of June -- will raise questions over whether India can achieve the government's official target for economic growth in the 2012 fiscal year of 8.5 per cent.

Some analysts have been encouraged in recent weeks by the Congress party-led government's efforts to unleash economic reforms in the face of falling growth.

"India often ultimately reforms when it reaches crisis point," said Deepak Lalwani, director of Lalwani Capital, a UK-based investment advisory business.

He said the trigger for greater dynamism was a slowing economy and the rupee falling to an all-time low. Investments have slowed, government finances are stretched and local business leaders complain about policy paralysis.

In response to the weakening outlook, the cabinet last week agreed a key reform to bring more foreign investment into the retail sector. It decreed that foreign companies would be able to have majority control of multi-brand retail operations and outright ownership of single brand stores.

Rohini Malkani, economist at Citigroup, the US banking group, in Mumbai, said India was enduring a tough fiscal year with a cocktail of domestic and global challenges.

"Tough times don't always last, but they can last long enough to do more damage to the economic structure and momentum," she said. "As a result, we have seen India growth expectations come off from 9 per cent levels to 7 per cent, with growing doubts on whether even a 7 per cent rate can hold."

Her bank forecasts economic growth in 2012 at 7.1 per cent, with a decline in the next year to 7 per cent.
Many Indian policymakers blame the weaker global economy, and especially the eurozone crisis, for India's slowing economic performance rather than troubles closer to home in what is widely seen as a domestically driven economy.

Montek Singh Ahluwalia, the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, has adjusted his growth forecast to between 7 per cent and 7.5 per cent for the year.

He said that India was suffering "a short-term cyclical slowdown" that would start to improve after three months. Many consider India's interest rate cycle to have peaked and predict cuts in benchmark interest rates within the first six months of next year.

"We have to do something to reverse [the slowdown]," Mr Ahluwalia said. "It's not something that will get reversed automatically."

Businesses plan for possible end of euro

International companies are preparing contingency plans for a possible break-up of the eurozone, according to interviews with dozens of multinational executives.

Concerned that Europe's political leaders are failing to control the spreading sovereign debt crisis, business executives say they feel compelled to protect their companies against a crash that can no longer be wished away. When German chancellor Angela Merkel and French president Nicolas Sarkozy raised the prospect of a Greek exit from the eurozone earlier this month, it marked the first time that senior European officials had dared to question the permanence of their 13-year-old experiment with monetary union.

"We've started thinking what [a break-up] might look like," Andrew Morgan, president of Diageo Europe, said on Tuesday. "If you get some much bigger kind of ... change around the euro, then we are into a different situation altogether. With countries coming out of the euro, you've got massive devaluation that makes imported brands very, very expensive."

Executives' concerns are emerging as eurozone finance ministers weigh ever more radical options to tackle the sovereign debt crisis, including the possibility of funnelling European Central Bank loans to struggling countries via the International Monetary Fund.

Car manufacturers, energy groups, consumer goods firms and other multinationals are taking care to minimise risks by placing cash reserves in safe investments and controlling non-essential expenditure. Siemens, the engineering group, has even established its own bank in order to deposit funds with the European Central Bank.

Traders prepare for endgame

Some are examining expert advice on the legal consequences of a eurozone split for cross-border commercial contracts and loan agreements. By contrast, most small and medium-sized firms have made few, if any financial and legal preparations.

"Market participants and, increasingly, real businesses are pricing in a break-up scenario," said Jean Pisani-Ferry, director of the Brussels-based Bruegel think-tank. "It is still hard to think the unthinkable, let alone to work out the details of it, but any rational player has to consider the possibility of it."

Some businesses with global reach say a euro break-up would be grim but manageable. "We have made a first rough analysis about the consequences of the discontinuation of the euro as the Portuguese currency," said Jürgen Dieter Hoffmann, finance director at Volkswagen Autoeuropa, the German carmaker's Portuguese arm. "The conclusion is that overall the impact would not be so negative to our company, as we are mainly an exporter and belong to a worldwide group."

Some French, Italian and Spanish executives say they have plans in place for severe financial and economic turbulence, but not specifically for a euro break-up. The risk, in their eyes, is that the region's stability might come under even greater threat if it became known that companies were contemplating the worst.

Air India agrees debt-restructuring plan

Air India has reached broad agreement with a consortium of 26 banks to restructure Rs180bn ($3.45bn) in debt and keep the loss-making state-owned carrier airborne, an Indian official said on Tuesday.

As part of the deal the government is considering repaying $3.45bn in Air India's debts over 10 years, a move that is likely to anger the country's ailing private-sector airlines. The move comes as India's aviation ministry proposed allowing foreign airlines to take a stake of up to 26% in domestic carriers, which could provide them with much needed funding.

Air India, which has an estimated net debt of more than $9bn and is expected to lose another $1.5bn this year, has received Rs32bn (about $615m) in government handouts in the past two and a half years. At the same time private-sector airlines have been living hand-to-mouth because of soaring fuel prices and a severe price war set in motion by the state-run carrier.

Industry executives say fare-slashing by Air India has put pressure on private airlines to hold down their own fares despite the number of passengers having increased by nearly 20% this year. Kingfisher Airlines, Jet Airways and SpiceJet have all lost more than 60% of their market value since the beginning of the year, while the Bombay Stock Exchange's benchmark Sensex index fell 22% during the same period.

Saharan Lillaney, aviation analyst at Angel Broking in Mumbai, said: "The restructuring is good for the industry as the government will force Air India to become more competitive by raising ticket prices."

Manmohan Singh, India's prime minister, and Vayalar Ravi, aviation minister, met the heads of the country's largest private-sector airlines last weekend but no agreement was reached over potential government assistance.

Apart from allowing foreign carriers to invest in Indian ones, the aviation ministry has also initiated talks with local state governments to cut the sales tax on jet fuel in a bid to help the ailing airlines. The plan is to halve the tax, which varies from state to state at between 8 and 24%.

Vijay Mallya, chairman of Kingfisher, did not attend the meeting with the prime minister, despite his cash-strapped carrier -- which was forced this month to cancel 50 flights a day -- being the worst affected by the sector's troubles.

Mr Mallya, who also controls the country's largest drinks group by sales, told the Financial Times on November 17 that he was close to securing a $370m deal with unnamed Indian investors and a banking consortium to save his group. However, he has yet to announce a final deal.

Maruti Suzuki to buy Diesel Engines from Fiat

In a significant development, Maruti Suzuki has decided to buy diesel engines from Fiat SpA to reduce the long waiting period on some of the top models.

Currently, Maruti gets all diesel engines from Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd. Suzuki Powertrain will make 300,000 diesel engines by March 2012, as against 240,00 last year.

Fiat India, which is a joint venture between Fiat SpA and Tata Motors, has the capacity to produce 300,000 diesel and gasoline engines in a year.

Maruti will get about 100,000 diesel engines from Fiat in a year. The Tata Motors is also using the Fiat engine. Hopefully, Hyundai also takes a cue and buy more diesel engines to reduce the long waiting period for its customers, who are compelled to wait for 5-6 months to get the top models such as Verna Fluidic.

Australian Court lifts Ban on Samsung Galaxy Tablet

In a big relief to Samsung Electronics, the Australia court has cleared the sale of Samsung Galaxy tablet in the country rejecting Apple Inc's allegations that Samsung had imitated iPad and iPhone.

The Federal Court's ruling is a victory for the South Korea-based company Samsung to sell its Tablet in Australia during Christmas shopping season.

The court on Wednesday said that Samsun is allowed to sell its latest Tablet in Australia as the evidence failed to show that the company infringes Apple's patent.

The court had restricted Samsung from selling of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia in October following the allegations by Apple.

However, Samsung will have to wait for a few more days to resume the selling of its Tablets as Apple has indicated that it will approach the country's High court.

Earlier, California-based Apple had sued Samsung in the US in April this year alleging that Samsung's tablets are the copy of the iPhone and iPad. In response, Samsung also filed a lawsuit accusing Apple of patent infringement of its wireless telecommunications technology.

The battle between two tech giants had spread to 10 countries including Germany and the Netherlands where the ruling came in favour of Apple that Samsung is an imitator of Apple.

American Airlines files for bankruptcy

American Airlines parent AMR, one of the few major U.S. airlines to avoid bankruptcy, finally succumbed Tuesday and filed for chapter 11.
AMR said that all of its subsidiaries will honor tickets and reservations and operate normal flight schedules during the bankruptcy process.
The airline also announced that Gerard Arpey, its chairman and CEO, is retiring. He is being succeeded by Thomas Horton, who said at a press conference that Arpey had opposed the bankruptcy filing.
In an interview with CNN's Richard Quest, Horton said the airline was forced into bankruptcy because of cost disadvantages it faced compared to rivals that had already gone though bankruptcies.
"Folks at American have worked very hard and honorably to avoid that path over the last decade, but it became clear that gap had become too wide now, it had become untenable, and it was time to turn the page," said Horton, who was named president of AMR in July 2010.
Before Tuesday's filing, American, Southwest and JetBlue were the only major U.S. airlines that had not filed for bankruptcy reorganization.
The timing surprised airline analyst Jeff Kaufman of Sterne Agee, since AMR had enough cash to ride out losses probably through next year.
At the same time, he said the filing makes sense because of several factors, including increased fuel prices, AMR's loss of business travel customers to competitors and tough labor union negotiations.
American was the world's largest carrier as recently as 2006. But mergers have pushed it to third in terms of miles flown by paying passengers, behind United Continental and Delta Air Lines.
American has been widely seen as the weakest of the major airlines for some time now. It has reported a profit in only one quarter since 2007, and it lost $4.8 billion over those 3-1/2 years. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect its losses to continue through at least 2012.
Still the company officials had been insisting that it was not looking at bankruptcy.
On Tuesday, Horton told CNN that bankruptcy "never has been a goal or preference."
He said that American is paying $800 million a year more in labor costs than it would be if it had labor contracts comparable to its competitors.
"Clearly it was our preference to do this in consensual fashion," he said. "Unfortunately, we were not successful in that regard." American will now gain significantly greater leverage in those talks given the bankruptcy court's power to void contracts.
Kaufman, the industry expert, said American needs contracts that would allow it the greater flexibility and lower staffing levels that other carriers have.
Horton also told CNN that it planned to move ahead with a massive order for 460 jets from Boeing and Airbus it announced in July.
American's current fleet includes 247 MD-80 planes that haven't been made since 1999 and are considered to be fuel guzzlers.
The airline said that its cash reserves, coupled with the cash from ongoing ticket sales, should give it the funds it needs during reorganization. Therefore, it will not need what is known as a debtor-in-possession loan that bankrupt companies typically use to operate under Chapter 11.
Shares of AMR, which had already plunged nearly 80% since the start of the year, tumbled another 81% to 30 cents a share on Tuesday. Shareholders are typically wiped out during the bankruptcy process.

Michael Jackson's Doc sentenced to 4 Years in Jail

Dr Conrad Murray, who is convicted of the involuntary manslaughter of King of Pop Michael Jackson, was sentenced to four years imprisonment by the US court on Tuesday.

Dr Murray was found guilty on November 8 by a Los Angeles court after a six-week trial. The court had decided to pronounce his sentence on November 29. He was behind the bars since the verdict.

Dr Murray is accused of giving a fatal dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol to the singer that led to death at the age of 50. The drug usually used in surgery.

Judge Michael Pastor said Dr Murray repeatedly lied, and he has absolutely no remorse. The court will hear the prosecution's request in January 2012 to pay compensation to Jackson's family for loss.

While the prosecution appealed for the maximum term for the convict, Dr Murray's lawyers argued for probation saying his client is already punished for life by being known as "he has killed Michael Jackson".

Meanwhile, Dr Murray’s license to practice could be cancelled. Lawyer Brian Panish read a statement on their behalf the Jackson family that the court should impose a suitable sentence for the accused.

They expressed their sense of loss saying "We respectfully request that you impose a sentence that demonstrates that physicians cannot sell their services to the highest bidder and lose sight of their Hippocratic Oath".

The pop singer's death was a shocking tragedy for his millions of fans across the globe. He was found dead at his Los Angeles mansion on June 25, 2009, three weeks before he was about to begin a series of concerts in London following the humiliation of his 2005 trial and acquittal on child molestation allegations.

What's there in Government's Lokpal Draft?

The Government’s Lokpal draft is a document to uphold almost the same status quo regarding retaining of power in the administration. The draft will bring only minimal changes to restrain corruption.

According to the draft Lokpal will have no power to initiate suo motu action or receive complaints of corruption from the general public. It can only probe complaints forwarded by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha or the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. It means the ombudsman will need to stand still even if it comes across with incidence of corruption.

Secondly, Lokpal will only be an Advisory Body with a role limited to forwarding reports to a "Competent Authority". But we should take notice of the fact that because the competent authorities have failed to provide proper actions, the concept of Jan Lokpal has come.

Thirdly, Lokpal will have no police powers and no ability to register an FIR or proceed with criminal investigations.  In other words the draft wants to say – be a silent spectator to the ever increasing crimes and police harassment (through inaction) in the country.

Fourthly, The CBI and Lokpal will be unconnected. This point can be accepted to provide a better ambiance to the CBI to investigate in its own style. But still it is a hope that involvement of Jan Lokpal can add to reach the truth limiting corruption in the Bureau.

Fifthly, all state anti-corruption agencies would be closed and responsibilities be taken over by the centralized Lokpal. But, practically, the very objective of bringing the ombudsman will not be achieved by limiting the power only to the central body.

Next, it grants no protection to the whistleblowers by Lokpal. We have already witnessed the lethal consequences the RTI activists have seen till date. In this context, is it secured to cease protection to the whistleblowers?

These vast loopholes in the Government’s Lokpal draft will limit the proposed Power of the citizens’ ombudsman’s bill and the goal of the notion will not be attained.

Puri Sea Beach remains unsafe for Tourists

The recent drowning incident, which left two tourists dead in Puri, has put a question mark on the safety measures taken by the authorities at the Puri sea beach.

Two software engineers Sonu Gupta (Chhattisgarh) and Hemant Choudhury (Maharashtra) were swept away by the high tide on Sunday. They were working in Bhubaneswar.

The lifeguards and local fishermen tried to save them, but in vain. It was not the first case of drowning death in Puri. At least 24 people have been died so far of drowning at the Puri Sea beach this year.

About 60 home guards were recently hired for guarding the sea beach. However, still this is not enough. It's high time the government and the administration take strong steps to set things in order and prevent such mishaps. Or else, Puri Sea Beach will become a death bed for the tourists.

Hindus upset at Bhagavad Gita ban attempt by Russian city

Hindus are upset over reported attempts to ban their ancient scripture Bhagavad Gita in Russian city of Tomsk.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement today, said that Bhagavad Gita was one of the holiest scriptures of Hinduism and attempts at banning it would hurt the devotees.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, said that Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken lightly. No faith, larger or smaller, should be maltreated.

Rajan Zed argued that it was apparently an attack on religious freedom and belittling of the entire community. He urged leaders of other world religions also to strongly protest this ban attempt, as Bhagavad Gita was a world treasure.

Zed pointed out that this philosophical and intensely spiritual poem, often considered the epitome of Hinduism, was highly revered by Hindus. Besides being the cornerstone of Hindu faith, Bhagavad Gita (Song of the Lord) was also one of the masterpieces of Sanskrit poetry and had been commented by hundreds of authors and translated into all major languages of the world.

It was a dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, just before the beginning of the great Mahabharata war, in which Lord Krishna gave spiritual enlightenment to the warrior Arjuna, who realized that the true battle was for his own soul. Its 700 verses in 18 chapters considered the nature of action, the religious and social duty, the human relationship to God, the means of liberation, and the nature of sacrifice, etc., Rajan Zed added.

Established in 1604, Tomsk, one of the oldest towns in Siberia (Russia), is a major center for Russia’s IT industry and houses Siberia’s oldest university Tomsk State University. Nikolay Nikolaychuk is reportedly the Mayor.

Lokpal Draft Report a Disappointment: Team Anna

While the government is facing a heat over the Foreign Direct Investment in retail in the winter session, Team Anna threatened to launch a massive demonstration against the government for its failure to bring a strong Lokpal Bill.

As per the report, the final draft report excludes lower bureaucracy out of the ambit of the ombudsman. Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Standing Committee also recommended the exclusion of judiciary and MPs under the Lokpal's purview rejecting the demand for the inclusion of the CBI under its jurisdiction.

Team Anna has been demanding for the inclusion of lower bureaucracy, higher judiciary, Citizens' Charter and setting up of Lokayuktas in state level in the ambit of Lokpal Bill.

Arvind Kejriwal, key member of Team Anna said that the government wants to exclude junior bureaucrats- Group C and D employees from the Lokpal Bill, which suggests that corruption will be still there on the ground level.

However, he welcomed the government's decision to bring NGOs under Lokpal. He said that the corruption in NGOS and media should be strengthened by separate mechanisms.

Over the exclusion of CBI in Lokpal, he said that the move by government is unacceptable. If the CBI will be controlled by the government, the Lokpal will remain as an empty tin box, he said.

Kiran Bedi, another team member, also supported Kejriwal's views. She welcomed the proposal to bring corporates, media and NGOs under the ambit of Lokpal.

The final draft is being prepared by a parliamentary committee which consists of 31 members from different parties and headed by Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi. It will come up with a final draft on November 30.

On the other hand, Anna Hazare has warned the government to go on another fast at Ramlila Maidan from December 27 if the Jan Lokpal Bill is not passed in the winter session of Parliament.

Pakistan decides not to attend Bonn Conference

Pakistan has decided to boycott next week's conference on Afghanistan's future in the German city of Bonn protesting over the Nato air strike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last week.

The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday. The meeting came amid the opposition's pressure to cut all the ties with the US.

Pakistan had condemned the attack terming it as "unprovoked and indiscriminate". It said that the sir strike violated its sovereignty and it would not attend the significant talks on Afghanistan's future. At least 24 soldiers including a Major were killed when the Nato choppers opened fire on a military checkpoint in the Pakistani tribal region of Mohmand on Saturday.

However, the US and Nato have apologized over the deaths of the Pakistani soldiers in the incident. Nato has been targeting the militants in Pakistan-Afghan border since several months after the killing of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in May.

FDI in Retail Sector: Good or Bad?

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail sector can be a good concept in Indian context. It is true that the same has got both good and bad effects, but a compromise with the bad points can result good.

India is the second fastest growing major economy in the world, with a GDP growth rate of 8.9% at the end of the first quarter of 2006-2007. But, India's huge population results in a per capita income of $3,300 at PPP and $714 at nominal. It means we need to do something big for the overcrowding population first. FDI is providing a large opportunity of employment to a huge mass of India. Accordingly, this is why we can go for FDI.

Presence of FDI for multiple retail products will generate competition. And as per economic principles competition in the market benefits the customer.  And customer enjoys sovereignty. The competition not only provides a better nominal price to the customer, rather it also brings enhancement in quality and other factors added to a product. Hence, FDI can be a good concept as the customers can reap better.

The concept of investment by foreign investors will bring an international harmony among the countries. The interdependency between the countries will also develop diplomatic relationship among the countries which is a good symbol towards establishment of peace and international brotherhood.

The said concept will bring a change in the lifestyle and way of trading. So, what is wrong with adopting a perfect way of trading instead of indulging in the traditional processes?

The next benefit is regarding the ‘chain system’.  In the traditional business policy, a consumer receives goods in an highly increased price as compared to its cost of production, because the middle men in the chain of bringing that product up to him demand a high rate of share merely for carrying and forwarding, which is absolutely useless, if you have an opportunity to bring it directly to the customer. FDI is the answer to this question, hence it can be welcome.

A hard truth for our country is that any innovative comes to the country the first thing the political leaders do is – they protest. So there is nothing new or wrong in that. Again, there are also loopholes in the traditional business policies. The ‘dalals’ in the suburbs of the country in many occasion literally harass the original producer, the farmers.

How does Hypertension affect the Body?

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a common health problem faced by many men and women especially who are obese, often stressed or anxious, alcoholics, diabetics or smokers. It affects the body as it adds to the workload of the heart and arteries.

People can live with hypertension for many years without having any symptoms. That's why high blood pressure is frequently called "the silent killer.

High blood pressure is a condition in which the patient has higher than normal blood pressure. It is currently defined as a BP of > 140/90 mmHg. There are three types of hypertension: Primary, secondary and white coat hyper tension.

Primary Hypertension

Primary Hypertension may lead to worse conditions.  It is not easy to find the cause of the primary hypertension. Some say that primary hypertension is linked to genetic, poor diet, overweight, etc.

Secondary Hypertension

Secondary hypertension is an effect of other medical conditions. It means there are several conditions that may cause high blood pressure. The disorder of an organ in the body may lead high pressure. Kidneys disorder is an example of the condition that may cause the secondary hypertension.

White Coat Hypertension

Tension and anxiety are known to cause temporary increases in blood pressure, which is known as white coat hypertension. If a person is having white coat hypertension, he is asked to monitor his blood pressure by wearing a device called an ambulatory blood pressure device. This device is usually worn for 24 hours and can take blood pressure every 30 minutes.

It is very important to know the type of hypertension one is having. The treatment is also essential because if it is not treated it causes the heart to work very hard and ultimately damages it. The American Medical Association notifies that serene cases of untreated hypertension can double the chance of a heart attack and a temperate case triples it.

Preventing Hypertension

One can control hypertension or blood pressure by adopting healthy lifestyle options like quit smoking, healthy eating habits like little salt, ample of fruits and vegetables and an active lifestyle involving daily walking or cycling. Practices like yoga, meditation also help in reducing high blood pressure. Exercise is an important treatment for hypertension. Only people with severe uncontrolled hypertension, which is very rare, need to be careful about exercise.

As per the court's order, all the accused will have to furnish two bond sureties of Rs 5 lakh each. However, the CBI opposed former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura's bail.

Kanimozhi along with five co-accused had approached the High Court after the Supreme Court granted bail to five corporate executives: Unitech Limited MD Sanjay Chandra, Swan Telecom Director Vinod Goenka and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group executives Hari Nair, Gautam Doshi and Surendra Pipara.

The court on Friday had adjourned the bail plea of Kanimozhi and five others in the case.
