Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin said during the company's magical years, "Talented People are attracted to Google because we empower them to change the world: Google has large computational resources and distribution that enables individuals to make a difference. Our main benefit is a workplace with important projects, where employees can contribute and grow."

In other words, the secret to amazing performance is empowering talented people to succeed at meaningful work.

This is Google.

In 2008, Google accomplished a rare feat among companies in any industry. Perched in Fortune magazine's lofty ranks of the top five most admired companies in America, Google also ranked among the top five of the magazine's best companies to work for. Millions of people around the world used Google's search engine daily, and ad revenues streamed in at an astonishing rate. The company's mountain View, California, headquarters took on almost mythical status, tempting many business observers to assume that lavish perks led to employee's outstanding performance.
Media accounts made the ten year old Internet powerhouse seem like an employee's paradise, albeit one that relied on fabulous wealth. World-class chefs served up three free meals a day in several cafes spread across the two dozen buildings of the Google campus. Hourly shuttles with Wi-Fi access transported employees, free of charge, between Mountain View and San Fransisco. Ping-Pong games enlivened workdays, dogs tagged by their owners sides, and the free state of the art gym never closed.

This is Google.

Effective leadership

Effective leadership is not defined by heroic acts at times of crisis, or by clever decisions along a complex contingency tree, but by consistent efforts to nurture and strengthen an effective, adaptable, principled culture. And those efforts can be made only by leaders who have strong principles themselves. The critical role of leaders at a time of crisis is not to personally resolve it, but to serve a role models of the values and culture of the company, to send a message that those values are even more important when facing challenges.
A group of Harvard Business School students launched the MBA Oath in 2009, and students groups around the world have signed on. A group of Young Global Leaders at World Economic Forum created a Global Business Oath to encourage CEO to make a public commitment to professional ethics. And a coalition of faculty, business leaders, students, and international organizations has established the Oath Project Foundation to help catalyze a movement to reshape the values of managers around the world.

Reports of Toyota's demise following the sudden acceleration crisis in 2009-2010 were greatly exaggerated. Initial accounts of Toyota's response to a mountain of public concern about Toyota's vehicle safety were quick to allege a number of severe flaws in Toyota's culture. The Crisis, indeed, cost Toyota dearly in recall costs, and loss of sales and reputation. A brand that for so long had been synonymous with reliability, customer-focus, environmental responsibility and world class quality was all of a sudden portrayed in the most negative way by analyst and the press. And yet, a year later, not only has Toyota turned the corner, but is has used the crisis as an opportunity to further strengthen key processes.

Treatises on crisis management normally focus on immediate damage control, PR strategies, and clever contingency plans. At a time of crisis, leaders may be hailed as heroes for taking "bold action", or they may be hung in the court of public opinion - as was the case with BP's CEO Tony Hayward following the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Numerous analysts and experts accused Toyota's leaders of responding late and insufficiently to the crisis, of denying or even trying to hide the facts, of putting profits before safety. But the ultimate test lay not in what senior leaders said and did in the days and weeks following the incident but in how the culture responded in the weeks and months thereafter.

The defining moment of Toyota's response was not a specific pronouncement by an executive in Japan or the United States but how Toyota's staff turned its energy to finding ways to improve, how Toyota's hundreds of customer service representatives responded to the tens of thousands of calls received daily from concerned customers, and how dealers worked relentlessly to rebuild trust with Toyota's customers.

One paradox of globalization is that it is accompanied by a greater need for deep national and local connections in plural public spheres.
To thrive in diverse geographies and political jurisdictions, companies must build a base of relationships with government officials, public intermediaries and customers that can ensure alignment of agendas even as circumstances change.
Once you accept that your intuition about how people behave is inherently flawed, then you really need a different model for learning about the world.
How do you hold me accountable for the success of this when I can't control what somebody might say about it or what somebody else might contribute to this conversation?

New initiative by Virgin Atlantic Airways

They developed VJAM which is open innovation initiative did with NESTA, the UK's National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. They provided seed capital to support the development of an outside development group that has gone on to create some very useful applications for their customers.

It created a taxi-sharing application, for example, that lets passengers on the same flight or on flights arriving at a similar time share a taxi ride if they're going the same way. This saves people money and is betterment for the environment - and it was all done by developers who are themselves their fans, followers and customers.
It's popular these days to say that television and other traditional forms of marketing don't work - that it's a fragmented world out there, and marketing is henceforth all about the thousands of little things that companies do in different constituencies, markets and segments.

I'm not sure that's altogether right. Focused, laser-like efforts are certainly very valuable, but I worry that we might get all the "micro" things right and miss the bigger picture. I don't want to lose sight of how important it is to have all our marketing efforts somehow embodied in something bigger - something iconic, even.
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has temporarily halted production at one of its two factories due to problems with workers, a spokesman for the country's largest car maker by sales said Monday.

This is the third production stoppage in three months at the factory at Manesar in the northern state of Haryana. Maruti stopped output for 10 working days at the factory in June due to a strike by workers demanding recognition of a new union and reinstatement of some sacked colleagues. And in July, Maruti stopped production for a day at the same plant due to a strike by some workers.

The Maruti spokesman, who didn't wish to be named, said that the company has asked about 1,600 workers at the Manesar plant to sign a so-called good conduct bond before they can enter the factory premises.

The auto maker has suspended 10 workers and dismissed another five at the Manesar plant for "sabotaging the production and deliberately causing quality problems in the vehicles produced at the plant last week," the spokesman said.

The local unit of Suzuki Motor Corp. produces the Swift and A-Star hatchbacks, and the SX4 sedan at the Manesar plant. Maruti has another factory at Gurgaon, also in Haryana.

One company decided to address the problem by setting aggressive targets for metrics such as the number of meetings with new customers per week. Giving reps goals they could not meet without changing their behavior forced them to trust the process. Success became self-reinforcing the more they stayed out of the support realm, the better they performed.
Successful transformation require steadfast support from the very top: someone must compel executives from across the organization to sit down, share data and be willing to talk about what's not working. A top leader must override internal politics, see the big picture, and focus on the best solution regardless of past practices.
We find that companies often struggle with the results of this analysis, which reveals just how inefficient their sales operations really are. When one logistic company plotted its comeback from the recent recession, for example, it discovered that reps spent just 35 percent of their day actively selling, because they were consumed by nonsales activities such as billing system updates, fire fighting and internal communications.
Companies typically restrict their definition of sales operations to transactional activities such as deal configuration, quote generation, and credit checks. A broader, end to end view recognizes that the functions supporting sales are interdependent.

Sales operations begin with transactional support activities critical to processing deals - but also involve groups that work directly with sales but are not tied to specific transactions such as help desks, Finance, IT support and Human Resources.

Growing Up In America

A reader might ask why two people who have devoted their careers to writing about foreign affairs—one of us as a foreign correspondent and columnist at The New York Times and the other as a professor of American foreign policy at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies—have collaborated on a book about the American condition today. The answer is simple. We have been friends for more than twenty years, and in that time hardly a week has gone by without our discussing some aspect of international relations and American foreign policy. But in the last couple of years, we started to notice something:

Every conversation would begin with foreign policy but end with domestic policy—what was happening, or not happening, in the United States. Try as we might to redirect them, the conversations kept coming back to America and our seeming inability today to rise to our greatest challenges.

This situation, of course, has enormous foreign policy implications. America plays a huge and, more often than not, constructive role in the world today. But that role depends on the country’s social, political, and economic health. And America today is not healthy—economically or politically. This book is our effort to explain how we got into that state and how we get out of it.

Readers familiar with our work know us mainly as authors and commentators, but we are also both, well, Americans. That is important, because that identity drives the book as much as our policy interests do. So here are just a few words of introduction from each of us—not as experts but as citizens.

Tom: I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was raised in a small suburb called St. Louis Park—made famous by the brothers Ethan and Joel Coen in their movie A Serious Man, which was set in our neighborhood. Senator Al Franken, the Coen brothers, the Harvard political philosopher Michael J. Sandel, the political scientist Norman Ornstein, the longtime NFL football coach Marc Trestman, and I all grew up in and around that little suburb within a few years of one another, and it surely had a big impact on all of us. In my case, it bred a deep optimism about America and the notion that we really can act collectively for the common good.

In 1971, the year I graduated from high school, Time magazine had a cover featuring then Minnesota governor Wendell Anderson holding up a fish he had just caught, under the headline “The Good Life in Minnesota.” It was all about “the state that works.” When the senators from your childhood were the Democrats Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale, and Eugene McCarthy, your congressmen were the moderate Republicans Clark MacGregor and Bill Frenzel, and the leading corporations in your state—Dayton’s, Target, General Mills, and 3M—were pioneers in corporate social responsibility and believed that it was part of their mission to help build things like the Tyrone Guthrie Theater, you wound up with a deep conviction that politics really can work and that there is a viable political center in American life.

I attended public school with the same group of kids from K through 12. In those days in Minnesota, private schools were for kids in trouble. Private school was pretty much unheard of for middle-class St. Louis Park kids, and pretty much everyone was middle-class. My mom enlisted in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and my parents actually bought our home thanks to the loan she got through the GI Bill. My dad, who never went to college, was vice president of a company that sold ball bearings. My wife, Ann Bucksbaum, was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, and was raised in Des Moines. To this day, my best friends are still those kids I grew up with in St. Louis Park, and I still carry around a mental image—no doubt idealized—of Minnesota that anchors and informs a lot of my political choices. No matter where I go—London, Beirut, Jerusalem, Washington, Beijing, or Bangalore—I’m always looking to rediscover that land of ten thousand lakes where politics actually worked to make people’s lives better, not pull them apart. That used to be us. In fact, it used to be my neighborhood.

Michael: While Tom and his wife come from the middle of the country, my wife, Anne Mandelbaum, and I grew up on the two coasts—she in Manhattan and I in Berkeley, California. My father was a professor of anthropology at the University of California, and my mother, after my two siblings and I reached high school age, became a public school teacher and then joined the education faculty at the university that we called, simply, Cal.

Although Berkeley has a reputation for political radicalism, during my childhood in the 1950s it had more in common with Tom’s Minneapolis than with the Berkeley the world has come to know. It was more a slice of Middle America than a hotbed of revolution. As amazing as it may seem today, for part of my boyhood it had a Republican mayor and was represented by a Republican congressman.

One episode from those years is particularly relevant to this book. It occurred in the wake of the Soviet Union’s 1957 launching of Sputnik, the first Earth-orbiting satellite. The event was a shock to the United States, and the shock waves reached Garfield Junior High School (since renamed after Martin Luther King Jr.), where I was in seventh grade. The entire student body was summoned to an assembly at which the principal solemnly informed us that in the future we all would have to study harder, and that mathematics and science would be crucial.

Given my parents’ commitment to education, I did not need to be told that school and studying were important. But I was impressed by the gravity of the moment. I understood that the United States faced a national challenge and that everyone would have to contribute to meeting it. I did not doubt that America, and Americans, would meet it.

There is no going back to the 1950s, and there are many reasons to be glad that that is so, but the kind of seriousness the country was capable of then is just as necessary now.

We now live and work in the nation’s capital, where we have seen firsthand the government’s failure to come to terms with the major challenges the country faces. But although this book’s perspective on the present is gloomy, its hopes and expectations for the future are high. We know that America can meet its challenges. After all, that’s the America where we grew up.

15 Strangest Resume Mistakes

Given that human resources managers say they spend less than a minute, on average, on each job application they see, it’s understandable that some people might go overboard in trying to bring some individuality to their work history. But would you list your unique ability to do the moonwalk in the “special skills” section of your resume?

That’s actually not the wackiest resume mistake CareerBuilder uncovered in a survey of 2,600 employers nationwide, who were asked to recall the most unusual resumes they’d ever seen. It seems safe to assume none of these people were hired, but since CareerBuilder didn’t specifically ask, I guess there’s an outside shot that one of these tactics actually worked. (Although probably not the one about being arrested for assaulting a former boss.) Here are the 15 oddest:
  1. Candidate said the more he was paid, the harder he worked
  2. Candidate said he had been fired from past positions, but still included those managers as references
  3. Candidate said getting an interview was important because he wanted an opportunity to show off his new tie
  4. Candidate listed her dog as a reference
  5. Candidate listed-yes, the moonwalk-as a special skill
  6. A husband and wife team looking to job share submitted a poem they had co-written
  7. Candidate listed ‘versatile toes’ as a selling point
  8. Candidate wrote that he would be “a good asset to the company” but somehow omitted the last two letters in “asset.”
  9. Candidate’s email address contained the phrase “shakinmybootie”
  10. Candidate mentioned that he had survived a bite from a deadly aquatic animal
  11. Candidate used first name only
  12. Candidate asked, “Would you pass up the opportunity to hire someone like this? I think not.”
  13. Candidate insisted that he be paid for the time he spent interviewing with the company
  14. Candidate shipped a lemon with resume, stating, “I am not a lemon.”
  15. Candidate included on his resume the fact that he had been arrested for assaulting his previous boss.
Lessons Learned
Can’t you be even a little imaginative in putting together your resume? No, says CareerBuilder’s vice president of human resources, Rosemary Haefner. “Creativity and personal touches may seem tempting to some job seekers, but many times, it’s a disqualifying distraction.”
Instead, Haefner suggests job seekers stick with the basics:
  • Stay relevant. Customize your resume to each individual position, highlighting the experience that makes you best-suited to that particular post.
  • Stay readable. If there’s no white space on your resume, reformat it to make it easier on the eyes. A wall of unbroken gray text is off-putting–especially if it’s the fiftieth resume someone’s seen that day.
  • Write a compelling professional summary. Ditch the ‘Objective’ line in favor of a two-sentence description of your relevant experience. This is the ‘hook’ that can convince a recruiter, HR pro, or hiring manager to spend a little more time on your application.
  • Proofread. It’s too easy for hiring managers to disqualify you based on a typo-if you don’t care about making sure your resume is perfect, what does that say about your level of conscientiousness? Proofread it yourself, and before sending it out, ask a few friends to proofread your resume for you.

In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

Here's Steve's letter to the board and community:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

Toyota is reportedly seeking to reduce its percentage of outside engineers to 10%. In addition, Tokyo headquarters has delegated more power to the Company's north American executives to make decisions affecting recall and strengthening the independence of quality management activities in each region.

Toyota has reorganized and, in effect, deliberately slowed down the product development process by establishing a new team of about 1000 quality engineers and by greatly expanding its rapid quality response teams around the globe.
