At least 40 people died and several were injured in a massive fire that broke out at AMRI hospital in south Kolkata on Friday. A probe has been ordered what caused the fire.
Fire department officials said that many died of suffocation after the fire broke out at the hospital in Dhakuria area of south Kolkata early this morning and spread to other rooms. The reason is unclear.
The injured people were rushed to SSKM hospital and many of the bodies were not identified as they are critically burnt. About 25 fire tenders have been engaged to evacuate all the patients and staff in the hospital. The fire has been doused, but it was still in the basement, as per the latest report.
Officials said that the fire might have broken out in the basement of the hospital and spread to other floors rapidly. The hospital is engulfed by smoke, which is posing as hindrance in the operations.
The firemen are trying to rescue patients trapped inside the ICU, ICCU, ITU and Critical Care units. Fire Services Minister Javed Khan said that the hospital did not have fire-fighting equipment.
