Dalit Christians, Muslims in Odisha demand SC/ST Status


In a significant development, the dalit (backward) Christians and Muslims in Odisha have demanded the SC/ST status as per the Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission recommendations.

The dalit Christians and Muslims held a press conference in Bhubaneswar and threatened further agitation in front of Raj Bhavan on December 10 if their demands are not met. They urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to take up their cause with the Centre.

They would start their agitation on the Human Rights Day on December 10 and continue it till December 15. A rally will be organised on December 15 and a memorandum will be submitted to the Prime Minister via the Governor of Odisha.

The prominent persons, who were at the press conference, included Dr. Swarupananda Patra (President, Odisha Minority Forum), Thomas Michael (Chairman of Odisha wing of National Dalit Christian Council), Bishop Sharat Chandra Nayak and Father Bijay Kumar Nayak.
