India demands justice for Richard Loitam

Richard Loitam, a student of the Acharya NRV School of Architecture in Bangalore, who was found dead in his hostel on April 18, a massive online campaign has been launched seeking justice for him.

Loitam was a second semester Architectural Engineering student of the Acharya NRV School of Architecture. He was found dead on his hostel bed in the afternoon of April 18 under suspicious circumstances.

While the police have described the death as the repercussion of a bike accident, the students insist it to be a lethal physical assault by the senior students of the hostel where he was living.

A major social media campaign has been in progress online seeking justice for the 19 year old student. The Facebook group in this context has already earned 5,000 plus members.

As per the F.I.R. filed with the Madanayakanahalli police, on the night of April 17, Loitam reportedly quarreled with some of his hostel mates over watching an IPL match and later found dead in his hostel room.

Derex Sorensangbam, Loitam’s uncle has expressed deep dissatisfaction over the steps taken by the University Authorities as they got the death message after two and half hours. He has alleged that the college authorities and the police are trying to conceal the truth.

The postmortem report has reportedly shown that Loitam had been severely assaulted. However, Police are waiting for the Forensic Science Laboratory report.

Nobody has been arrested so far in this connection.

A protest meet was organized on Sunday. Amidst candles and slogans, people gathered to condemn the homicide and demanded that justice be brought at the earliest.

If this is really a case of physical assault by the senior students, the case is one of the most unfortunate events for the students. Ragging should be stopped at any cost. The concerned authorities should look into the matter without any bias and the culprits should be punished in the interest of justice.
