Every product has a hidden backstory of impacts caused by its manufacturing, transport, ingredients, or use. However, customers today have no information to compare products according to their ecological effects. In Ecological Intelligence, Daniel Goleman makes the call for “radical transparency” regarding how products are made.

If all the effects of industrial production could be quantified and made readily available, then consumers would be empowered to make decisions that better align with their values. By shifting the balance of power to consumers, radical transparency will allow good environmental decisions and practices to pay off.
