Toyota is producing about 3.5 million vehicles a year with 25,000 production workers about the same number as in 1966 when it was producing one million vehicles.

Quality enhancement typically involves greater employee commitment an utilization fewer employees are needed to produce the same level of output. As quality rises, so does demand yet this demand can be met with proportionately fewer employees than previously.
